Pontoon Blackjack Games Online
Pontoon Blackjack is an English variation of the initial blackjack game played with a standard 52-card deck. It is much more popular in Australia similar to how Spanish 21 is in the United States. The following games are often mistaken for Pontoon Blackjack:
- Treasury 21 at Conrad Treasury Casino in Brisbane.
- Jupiter 21 at Conrad’s Casino in Queensland.
- Paradise Pontoon at Cairns’ Reef Casino in Queensland.
- Federal Pontoon in Tasmania.
These games may be a variant of the American game called Spanish 21 that casinos in Australia and Malaysia offer, but it is not the same as Pontoon Blackjack. It should not be compared to Spanish 21, either, as the rules are much different.
Pontoon is a blackjack game variation that is played on a table just like that of the original game of Blackjack with either a 4-deck CSM (continuous shuffling machine) or a shoe. Games using a shoe have six or eight standard decks of 52 cards minus ten-spot cards. The rules are quite close to that of Spanish 21 but there are some differences between the two. Following are the most prominent differences:
- On a Soft 17, also known as H17, the dealer always hits.
- Ace is counted as 1 and not 11 in a pre-doubled hand.
- Drawing on split Aces, or NDSA, is not permitted. If a player splits, each Ace they have is only given one card.
Players are able to surrender only against a dealer’s hand that consists of an Ace or face card. And if it results in the dealer having a natural hand, then the player loses the whole bet – making this play less desirable. This is a missed opportunity to win, without conditions, by drawing ones way to 21.
Nevertheless, with certain rules of Pontoon Blackjack, the house edge is much lower than they are in a game of Spanish 21. But there are, also, different strategies than can be used to increase ones chances of winning at Pontoon Blackjack. The strategies for Pontoon is very close to Spanish 21 but may be more complex to some players, which is largely due to the rule about a no-hole-card along with soft doubling limitations. But with the optimal plays, players would be in a very good position to reduce the casinos edge down to below 0.5 percent.
